My Courses

My course assignments are listed below, along with a brief summary of each course.

Most of the courses I teach are traditional lecture-based courses, and most of these have a laboratory component.

All my lecture-based courses incorporate two common features: lectures delivered with the aid of Microsoft Powerpoint® and out-of-class assignments.

Microsoft Powerpoint®

I present all lectures with the aid of Microsoft Powerpoint®. All lecture materials are translated into Adobe PDF® files in two basic formats: the normal presentation format, in which one color slide is displayed on each page, and a lecture outline format, in which the text is summarized in outline form. I expect all students to print the lecture outlines and bring them to lecture to aid their note-taking.

All lecture materials and supplemental materials, such as animations and movies, are distributed to students via my course Blackboard sites.

Out-of-class Assignments

I use out-of-class assignments to provide opportunities for students to apply the concepts covered in class and to facilitate student learning. In those courses that have a laboratory component, the assignments are generally associated with lab activities.

Course Assignments

Biol 122 - Biological Concepts II

Biology 122 is the second of a two-semester pair of introductory biology courses taught at the University of Mary Washington (4 credits w/ lab). Does not count toward biology major. Offered every spring semester. Prerequisite: Biol 121 or its equivalent.

Biol 211 - Cellular Biology

Biol 211 is a comprehensive introduction to the structure and function of the cell (4 credits w/ lab). This course is a required course in the biology major; offered every fall semester. Prerequisites: Biology 121 & 122 or Biology 125 & 126; and Chemistry 111, 112.

Biol 331 - Histology

Biol 331 is a study of the structure and function of vertebrate / mammalian tissues, with an emphasis on human tissues (4 credits w/ lab). Offered every spring semester. Prerequisite: Biology 211.

Biol 443 - The Biology and Biochemistry of Proteins

Biol 443 is a study of the structural biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics of proteins (3 credits). Prerequisites: Biology 211 and Chemistry 211; or Chemistry 317.

Biol 451 - Seminar

Biol 451 is a course in which senior biology majors prepare and present an oral report on a topic in the biological sciences. Each seminar section focuses on a particular topic. My sections always focus on the cellular basis of physiological processes. The course is required for all senior biology majors (2 credits).

Biol 481 - Readings in the Biological Sciences

Biol 481 is an individualized independent study course in which individual students read and study selections from the biological literature (1 credit). The course is open to second semester sophomores, juniors, and senior biology majors. Non-majors can take the course by permission of the Department. Biol 481 is a prerequisite for doing undergraduate research for academic credit (Biol 491) and is usually taken by students who have already arranged to engage in a research project with a particular professor.

Biol 491 - Special Problems in Biology

Biol 491 is the course through which biology majors get academic credit for research. Each student pursues and individualized laboratory or field investigation supervised by a staff member. The course is open to junior and senior biology majors. Non-majors can take the course by permission of the Department (1 - 3 credits). Prerequisite: Biology 481.
