My Instructional Technology Work

On-line Laboratory Manuals (OLMs)

I am very active in the development of online tools for the undergraduate classroom and teaching laboratory. My current work centers around the development of tools I call online laboratory manuals, or OLMs.  My online lab manuals combine the features of a conventional laboratory manual with the information storage and display capabilities of the computer. My OLMs are not only designed to guide students through experiments and studies at the laboratory bench, they also offer students the library of digital images and the data input, sharing, analysis and retrieval capability that can significantly enhance the quality of the laboratory experience.

I am currently working on three OLM projects:

HistologyOLM (version 3.0) is an online laboratory manual I've created for my Histology course (Biol 331).

CellBiolgyOLM (version 3.0)is an on-line laboratory manual I've created for Biol 211, Cellular Biology, at the University of Mary Washington.

ProteinsOLM (version 1.0)is an on-line laboratory manual I am developing for my Biology and Biochemistry of Proteins course.

The BiologyOLS

I placed my OLMs under an unmbrella site I call the BiologyOLS (OLS stands for on-line laboratory suite).  The BiologyOLS serves as a simple gateway to my OLMs.

Web Sites

I manage two websites.  This one, stevegallik.org, of course and umwbiology.org, the business site of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Mary Washington.  Both are built using the Drupal content management system and are hosted off-campus by Bluehost.
